What the Airports Branch Does

The Branch's primary responsibility is the regulation of 21 leased federal airports on Commonwealth land. The Branch administers the Airports Act 1996, its associated regulations and the airport head leases.

Airspace regulation

Legislation to give effect to the transfer of airspace regulatory function from Airservices to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority was enacted by the Parliament and came into force on 1 July 2007.

Airspace and Air Traffic Management Risk Management Policy Statement

As an International Civil Aviation Organization contracting State, Australia has an aviation State Safety Program which demonstrates Australia’s aviation safety management systems approach to risk management.

This policy statement confirms that Australia’s Government aviation agencies will adopt a common approach to risk management in relation to the assessment of airspace and air traffic management.

Australian Airspace Policy Statement

Under Section 8 of the Airspace Act 2007 (the Act) the Minister must make the Australian Airspace Policy Statement (AAPS).

The AAPS provides guidance to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) on the administration of Australian airspace noting the functions of and exercise of powers by CASA are set out in the Act and the Airspace Regulations 2007.

As per the Act, the AAPS must be reviewed every three years. The current AAPS came into effect on 19 November 2021.

Aviation Accident Investigations

On 20 March 2014 the Australian Government tabled its response to the Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee report into Aviation Accident Investigations. The Committee's report examined a range of issues in relation to aviation accident investigations and reporting in Australia as well as the findings of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau report into the Pel-Air accident off Norfolk Island in November 2009.
