Delivering road and rail networks
The Australian and NSW Government's road and rail infrastructure investment in support of the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) will provide the connections needed for day one airport operations.
The more than $2 billion M12 Motorway project, which was completed in March 2026, delivered a toll free 16km east-west motorway between the M7 Motorway near Cecil Hills and The Northern Road at Luddenham. The M12 Motorway will serve as a major access route to WSI and connect to Sydney’s broader motorway network.
The $1.6 billion upgrade of The Northern Road was completed in 2021 and upgraded around 35 kilometres of The Northern Road between The Old Northern Road at Narellan and Jamison Road at South Penrith. Improvements under the $509 million Bringelly Road Upgrade project were completed in 2020 and provide better road linkages within Western Sydney and to WSI.
Looking forward, the Australian Government's ongoing road and rail infrastructure investment will also support airport operations into the future. The Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport rail project will deliver a new 23-kilometre metro rail from St Marys to the Aerotropolis at Bradfield via WSI, with six new metro stations at St Marys, Orchard Hills East, Luddenham Road, Airport Business Park, Airport Terminal and the Aerotropolis at Bradfield; and stabling and maintenance facilities at Orchard Hills.
Transport for NSW is delivering expanded regular bus services to connect Penrith, Oran Park, Campbelltown, Liverpool, Mount Druitt and Leppington with local centres, WSI and the emerging Bradfield City Centre. Additionally, a temporary free shuttle bus service between St Marys Station and WSI will be introduced to support the opening of WSI while the Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport project is being completed.
