At the 2026–27 Budget, the Australian Government committed $47.1 million to the ongoing development of a Maritime Single Window (MSW). The MSW will enhance long-term productivity and resilience of the Australian transport industry. It will cut regulatory costs and provide a single digital portal for international maritime reporting.
Over the next 3 years, we will work closely with Australia's border agencies. The next next stage in the development of an MSW includes:
- preliminary development of a digital portal
- a legislative plan for implementation
- design for integration with border agency systems.
This work will support future decisions by government regarding the rollout of a fit-for-purpose system in Australia.
About the Maritime Single Window
An MSW is a digital platform that allows the maritime industry to submit mandatory information through a single online service. It will provide a central point for reporting information about vessel arrivals, port stays and departures. The MSW aims to simplify reporting requirements, reduce administrative burden and improve information sharing between industry and government agencies.
By enabling information to be submitted once and shared securely across relevant agencies, the system is expected to:
- improve the efficiency of reporting processes
- reduce duplication and manual data entry
- support the ongoing digital transformation of the shipping industry
- improve visibility of maritime activities through near real-time information sharing
- strengthen connections with international maritime data-sharing networks
- support Australia's broader emissions reduction goals.
