Wujal Wujal is a small Aboriginal community on the Bloomfield River between the Daintree and Cooktown that has long faced power reliability issues due to its isolation and exposure to flooding. In late 2023, Cyclone Jasper left Wujal Wujal and nearby Degarra without power for an extended period, highlighting the need for a new approach to resilience for isolated communities.
The Wujal Wujal Microgrid is being developed to provide energy independence and long-term resilience for the community. The project comprises a 1.5 megawatt solar and battery system to enable self-generation and storage of power for both communities, ensuring reliable supply even when disconnected from the main grid.
The project is funded by the Australian Government through the Disaster Ready Fund. The Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC is working with the Queensland Reconstruction Authority and National Emergency Management Agency to deliver the microgrid.
Approvals and engineering design are underway, with construction expected to commence in 2026 and completion targeted for 2027.
The project will be developed in collaboration with Volt Advisory Group, and working with Ergon Energy, and relevant government agencies, reflecting a model of partnership grounded in cultural respect, technical innovation, and community empowerment.
Josh Paterson, CEO of Jabalbina Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC, highlighted the importance of targeted support and strategic partnerships:
"Eastern Kuku Yalanji people are leading the push for renewable projects in far north Queensland, with two projects set to deliver resilient and sustainable energy solutions in the communities of Wujal Wujal / Degarra and the Daintree," Mr Paterson said.
Beyond energy reliability, the microgrid will create local employment and training opportunities, enable economic development, and strengthen community self-determination.
The Wujal Wujal Microgrid stands as a leading example of how regional and Indigenous communities can drive Australia's renewable transition—combining local leadership with national vision for a resilient, net-zero future.
