Site Investigation

  • Environmental Resources Management Australia Pty Ltd (ERM) is the contaminated land specialist leading the Program Investigation at Karratha Airport.
  • Procurement of an accredited site auditor is currently underway.
  • The Program investigation at Karratha Airport commenced on 7 May 2025.
  • The investigation will address potential sources of PFAS at the airport, as well as potential migration pathways to receptors both on- and off- airport.
  • The Department is consulting with Airservices Australia to understand works already underway and to avoid duplication, where possible.
  • The Department will engage with relevant state agencies to support the review of key investigation reports and plans.
  • Participation in the Program is voluntary. Karratha Airport formalised its involvement by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department on 06 May 2025.

Where is the Investigation up to?

  • The Preliminary Site Investigation (PSI) report is being prepared by the contaminated land specialist. The report will be reviewed by the department and an independent environmental auditor once complete.

Next Steps

  • The Preliminary Site Investigation will inform the need for further investigations and/or development of a management plan.
