Site investigation
- Environmental Resources Management Australia Pty Ltd (ERM) is the contaminated land specialist leading the Program investigation at Jandakot Airport.
- The Program investigation at Jandakot Airport commenced in March 2024 and is anticipated to be completed mid-2026.
- The investigation will address potential sources of PFAS at the airport, as well as potential migration pathways to receptors both on and off airport.
- An accredited contaminated land auditor from JBS&G Australia Pty Ltd has been engaged by the department to independently audit the investigation to ensure compliance with relevant regulations, national guidance and best practice.
- To support the review of key investigation reports and plans, an Investigation Consultation Forum (ICF) has been formed. The ICF members include the department, the contaminated land specialist, the accredited contaminated land auditor, the Airport and relevant state agencies.
- Airport participation in the Program is voluntary. Jandakot Airport signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the department to join the Program on 25 July 2023.

Where is the investigation up to?
- The Jandakot Airport investigation includes a Preliminary Site Investigation (PSI), Sampling Analysis and Quality Plans (SAQP), Detailed Site Investigation (DSI) and Mass Flux Study.
- The PSI report, Mass Flux SAQP and DSI SAQP have been finalised following review by the ICF members.
- The investigation's focus will be sampling and analysis on airport land to determine the nature and extent of PFAS in soil and groundwater, as well as potential migration pathways between the airport and adjacent residential land.
- On airport fieldworks commenced late 2024 and are continuing throughout 2025.
- Off airport fieldworks, including residential property sampling, commenced in February 2025.
- ERM visited around 180 residential properties and, where the resident consented, undertook sampling (informed by a Water Use Survey).
Next steps
- Investigation fieldworks are continuing throughout 2025 and include the installation of additional groundwater monitoring wells on and off airport.
- All off airport residents that consent to sampling under the Program will receive a copy of the sampling analysis from their property. Relevant WA authorities will be consulted about residential sampling results and will provide associated guidance and advice to residents as appropriate.
- ERM will engage with airport tenants and off airport residents impacted by the investigation works ahead of any scheduled activities.
- Following fieldworks, a Mass Flux Study report and DSI report will summarise investigation outcomes and identify and recommend next steps.
- Planning has commenced for a Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment to be conducted in early 2026.
- The investigation will inform the development of a PFAS Management Plan for Jandakot Airport that will outline the recommended management options to address any identified elevated risk of exposure to PFAS to human health and/or the environment.
