Christmas Island economy

Government service delivery and phosphate mining are the major economic activities on Christmas Island. Christmas Island National Park, managed by the Director of National Parks, makes up almost two thirds of the Territory at 85 square kilometres in size. There is a small tourism sector focussed on the unique environmental and cultural assets of the Territory. There is also substantial contracting and service delivery activities that contribute to the visitor economy.

The government sector includes administration, health, education, policing, customs, border protection, national parks management, quarantine and defence.

The Australian Government supports the Indian Ocean Territories Regional Development Organisation [Australia's Treasure - Indian Ocean Territories] to work with industry, businesses and the community in facilitating sustainable development in the IOT. The Australian Government also supports entities that enable economic development including the Christmas Island Tourism Association (CITA) and the Indian Ocean Group Training Association (IOGTA).
