National Fuel Security Plan

Amid global disruptions to oil and gas supplies, the Australian Government - in partnership with state and territory governments - is taking action to safeguard fuel supply and keep Australia moving.

Together, we are working with overseas suppliers, other nations and industry to safeguard Australia’s fuel supply to make sure it is robust and reliable.

Australia’s approach is set out in the National Fuel Security Plan (the National Plan) which has been endorsed by National Cabinet, to facilitate a consistent national response. The National Plan has four levels – level 1 being the lowest and level 4 requiring the strongest action.

Australia is currently at level 2.

There are four levels in the Plan: 1. Plan and prepare; 2. Keeping Australia moving - we are here; 3. Taking targeted action; 4. Protecting critical services for all Australians

We are taking steps to increase supply – both now and over the long term.

The National Plan recognises the importance of fuel to the Australian way of life, including having an accessible, affordable supply of diesel to support the national economy.

Guided by the National Plan, we will help keep the community and business updated about Australia’s fuel supply and provide advice about any further fuel security measures that may be required.

We can all help our supply go further by making a few simple changes to use less fuel and leave more for those who really need it like our farmers, truckies and essential services.

All Australians are in this together. We can all play our part to make sure fuel gets to those who need it most.
