Amid global disruptions to oil and gas supplies, the Australian Government - in partnership with state and territory governments - is taking action to safeguard fuel supply and keep Australia moving through the National Fuel Security Plan (National Plan), endorsed by National Cabinet.
Together, we are working with overseas suppliers, other nations and industry to make sure our fuel supply is robust and reliable. The ‘Every Little Bit Helps’ national advertising campaign is supporting the delivery of the National Plan to ensure a consistent national response and encouraging people to do their bit by taking voluntary and practical actions.
The National Plan has four levels – level 1 being the lowest and level 4 requiring the strongest action. Australia is currently at level 2.
We are taking steps to increase supply – both now and over the long term.
The National Plan recognises the importance of fuel to the Australian way of life, including having an accessible, affordable supply of diesel to support the national economy.
Guided by the National Plan, we will help keep the community and business updated about Australia’s fuel supply and provide advice about any further fuel security measures that may be required.
We can all help our supply go further by making a few simple changes to use less fuel and leave more for those who really need it like our farmers, truckies and essential services.
All Australians are in this together. We can all play our part to make sure fuel gets to those who need it most.

- Temporary 20% reduction of the Minimum Stockholding Obligation for diesel and petrol
- Temporarily amending Australia’s fuel quality standards to allow higher sulphur levels and release around 100 million litres a month of new petrol supply
- a six-month adjustment to lower the flashpoint for diesel, increasing diesel supply options from refiners and international sources.
