The 2025 World Boccia Challenger begins in Canberra

The Australian Government has contributed $250,000 to support the successful delivery of the event.

This week Australia has welcomed athletes from around the world to compete in the 2025 World Boccia Challenger. It's the first international Boccia event taking place in Australia since 2013, and the first time the event has been held in the nation's capital.

Boccia is the most inclusive sport in the world, enabling people with a significant physical disability to participate in sport. Boccia athletes compete in singles, pairs and team events where they throw, kick or use a ramp device to propel leather balls as close as possible to a white ball called the 'jack'. There are six red and six blue balls, with one colour assigned to each player or team.

The event provides an opportunity to showcase Boccia on the world stage and spotlight para-sports in the community as part of Australia's green and gold decade of major sporting events leading up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Arena is hosting the event, from 5 to 11 November 2025.

The Australian Government, through the Australian Sports Commission, is supporting the event's delivery in addition to the funding contribution. Current and future Boccia athletes and their support teams will also benefit from legacy initiatives included as part of this funding.

Custom flooring, along with mobile and electric change tables, will improve accessible amenities at the AIS.

The government is committed to elevating inclusivity and participation in sport from grassroots to high performance levels, as set out in Australia's national sport strategy, Sport Horizon.
