Community Location: Budgong, NSW 2577

Description of community needs:

Bugong Road, has no mobile signal for almost its entire length west of the Emery's Road topographical ridge which blocks access to existing towers towards Nowra. Installing a tower that services the watershed west of the Emery's road and western end of the Browns Mountain plateau that would dramatically improve the quality of life for residents in this area, as well as providing better communications in the event of a disaster. This area was heavily impacted by the 2019-2020 bushfires.

Community Location: Elmhurst, Pomonal, Streatham, Tatyoon, Warrak, Wickliffe, Willaura, Yalla-Y-Poora

Description of community needs:

These communities have reported a complete lack of service since 3G was turned off. These mobile black spots negatively impact on preparedness and response in emergencies and in the day-to-day lives of residents.

Council hosted a series of Community Emergency Management Planning Workshops in late 2024-early 2025. A very clear message from these workshops was the major concerns around lack of coverage and the inability to stay up to date on the VicEmergency warnings during the recent bushfires.

EFTPOS machines also regularly drop out, and the lack of reception discourages revisits by tourists.

Poor mobile reception affects daily communication, public safety and economic opportunities, particularly during natural disasters such as cyclones and major flooding.

Community Location: Wannon

Description of community needs:

Wannon, Victoria is a picturesque rural community known for its farming industries and natural beauty, including the stunning Wannon Falls, a popular local attraction. However, the area faces challenges with mobile coverage, which affects communication and safety for both residents and visitors. Improved 5G coverage would enhance access to emergency services, real-time updates, and essential information for locals and tourists. It would also support local businesses, boost economic growth, and improve access to services like healthcare and education.

Community Location: Bomaderry and surrounds

Description of community needs:

Constituent has lived in Bomaderry and now reside in Old Erowal Bay, frequently traveling through the region. Reception in Bomaderry was so poor that constituent often had to take calls in the shower, the only place with a stable signal.

Now, relying on the Tomerong tower, which serves Tomerong, Sanctuary Point (6,000+ homes), and beyond, constituent still experiences spotty one-bar service. Without NBN access, many residents depend on mobile networks for connectivity. Improving coverage is crucial for reliable communication and emergency access in these areas.

Community Location: Wybong area

Description of community needs:

Wybong is adjacent to the Mangoola Coal Mine and has a community hall. Wybong is characterised by mine traffic including the movement of heavy vehicles. Wybong Road is also used as a detour especially during severe weather events. Wybong also has some farms which involves vehicles moving livestock and farm supplies such as hay and fodder. The poor reception in these areas creates safety risks and disrupts communication. This nomination is supported by feedback from local residents and Council’s Operational Teams.

Community Location: Toogoolawah, Ironbark, Kilcoy, Harlin, Lowood, Thagoona, Esk, Coominya, Monsildale, Yednia and Jimna

Description of community needs:

In the Somerset Region of the Blair electorate mobile phone coverage and access to internet data services can be extremely limited. Specifically, this includes the communities of Ironbark, Toogoolawah, Kilcoy, Fernvale and Harlin, Lowood, Thagoona, Coominya and Monsildale. While this is a daily issue for many families across the region, during flooding and other major weather events, the constant dropouts, failures to connect, slow speeds and repeated reconnections are common, frustrating and potentially life threatening.

Community Location: Berry

Description of community needs:

I think Berry town would be a perfect location to benefit from this scheme.

I am frequently advised how poor the reception is in Berry. It is a decent sized town with many locals and tourists frequently visiting, but often has no reception. Many business owners complain about the issue, which causes challenges for paying by card, looking up maps and using QR menus etc.

I think it would make a big difference to peoples experience of visiting Berry if there was better reception.
