Mobile connectivity is important for all South Australians, particularly those in our regions.
Following a call from a resident raising concerns about mobile coverage, my office contacted residents of this area about their experiences.
My office was overwhelmed by responses regarding poor coverage and patchy coverage, as well as expressing concerns using the network in the event of a natural disaster, including receiving timely information and seeking help for themselves and others.
Improved coverage in this area will ensure residents and visitors have access to adequate services, particularly with emergency services during times of need.

Community Location:
Berrara
Description of community needs:
Constituents had a house at Berrara for 25 years and in last 5 years retired to a new home in Berrara. During this time phone reception has been pathetic. It is quite common to see people walking down the road with phones above their heads trying to get reception. Constituents are connected to Telstra but without a functioning modem it is impossible to get reception on either landline or mobile phones. Constituents endure daily interruptions to television internet, computers, phones etc. Recently a storm took their modem down and they had to threaten Telstra with action to get a replacement as soon as possible.

Community Location:
Sussex Inlet
Description of community needs:
There are mobile coverage issues in Berrara. Berrara is situated between the Sussex Inlet and Bendalong mobile towers. Due to this positioning, mobile coverage is inconsistent, with users occasionally receiving just one bar of 4G signal. With the closure of the 3G network, there is no longer a fallback option for connectivity.
During peak seasons, the significant increase in visitors overloads the network, often rendering mobile service completely unavailable.

Community Location:
Callala
Description of community needs:
Optus users experience daily black spots along Forrest Road (between the highway and Callala Beach). No service in this area poses a serious safety risk, particularly for those traveling alone at night. This results in inability to call for help in emergencies and increased risk for night-time commuters. Mobile coverage should be improved along Forrest Road by upgrading existing infrastructure or installing new towers to enhance safety and connectivity.
