Transport accidents are a leading cause of injury, both fatal and non-fatal. The primary purpose of this publication is to provide a broad overview of serious injury due to land transport accidents in Australia in the one-year period 200304, the latest year for which data are available. The main focus is on accidents involving road vehicles travelling on public roads (called travelling in traffic).

Summary

Speeding is a major contributor to road trauma and attitudes toward speeding are hypothesised to be a key determinant of the behaviour. Attitudinal research is limited by reliance on self-report measures and the attendant possibility of reporting biases. The Implicit Association Test (IAT; Greenwald, McGhee & Schwartz, 1998) aims to measure attitudes without reliance on self-report, by assessing the association between a target-concept and an evaluation, in terms of reaction time for compatible versus non-compatible pairings.

Police enforcement of Road Rules and Regulations involves a wide range of complex tasks, many of which demand the use by Police of modern technologies (e.g., fixed and mobile speed detection devices). The aim of this project was to identify and define, from first principles, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and telematics technologies which have significant potential to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of Police enforcement activities in Australia.

This report documents two studies undertaken to identify and assess the psychological and social factors influencing motorcycle rider behaviour. The primary aim of the research was to develop a Rider Risk Assessment Measure (RRAM), which would act as a tool for identifying high-risk riders by assessing rider intentions and self-reported behaviour. The first study (n = 47) involved a qualitative exploration of rider perceptions utilising a focus-group methodology.

A designated shipper body is an association which, in the Minister's opinion, represents the interests of Australian shippers. A peak designated shipper body represents these interests generally while a secondary shipper body represents these interests in relation to a particular trade, particular kinds of goods or a particular part of Australia.
