CR 197: Community Attitudes to Road Safety: Community Attitudes Survey Wave 13 (2000)

Summary

This is the thirteenth in a series of annual surveys of community attitudes and perceptions towards a range of road safety issues. Findings from this 2000 Community Attitudes Survey (CAS 13) were derived from telephone interviews with a national sample of 1,593 Australian residents aged 15 years and over. A summary of the main findings from the 2000 survey, along with a description of emerging trends and patterns, is provided below. More detailed results are provided in the main body of this report.

CR 190: Evaluating a regulated hours regime on-road and an alternative compliance regime under simulated conditions (2000)

Summary

This project investigated the effects of two different work-rest schedules on fatigue and performance. The study addressed an important problem for Australian drivers and the long distance road transport industry in particular, that of driver fatigue. There is considerable evidence that for professional long distance drivers, fatigue is a major problem that is not being adequately addressed by current working hours regulations.

Monograph 6 – Australia's international road safety performance 1998

Summary

This monograph compares Australia's roadsafety performance to its OECD counterparts.The comparisons are drawn taking into account the level of motorisation and population of the countries reported. The results highlight the substantial gains made in road safety both in Australia and many other countries from 1975 to 1998. CR 189: Development of measures of fatigue: using an alcohol comparison to validate the effects of fatigue on performance (2000)

Summary

The aim of this study was to develop a range of measures that could be used in evaluating the effectiveness of different work-rest schedules for managing fatigue. To be useful for this purpose, tests need to have demonstrated sensitivity to fatigue and be able to be applied in working environments. In addition, to be useful, tests are needed that provide results that can be interpreted in terms of the person's relative capacity compared to a recognised standard for safety.

CR 191: On-road evaluations of a regulated hours regime and an alternative compliance regime (2000)

Summary

This is the third report in a series describing research aimed at developing better models of work-rest schedules that have demonstrated effectiveness for managing fatigue. The ultimate purpose of these studies is to support the development of alternative compliance approaches to the regulation of working hours.

Monograph 4 – Australia's international motorcycle safety performance 1987 to 1997

Summary

This monograph compares Australias motorcycle safety record with that of other OECD nations over the decade 1987 to 1997 using ATSB road fatality data and the International Road Traffic Accident Database. Motorcyclist fatalities in Australia and the OECD, 1997

Comparisons of motorcycle safety between nations need to take into account the relative size of motorcycle fleets in those nations.

Comparisons here are therefore made in terms of fatalities per 10 000 registered motorcycles.

CR 200: Bullbars and Road Trauma (2000)

Summary

This report investigates the positive and negative aspects of bull bars with regard to road trauma in Australia through assessment of the current literature and analysis of fatal road crash data. Quantification of risk is limited by a number of factors, including restricting the analysis to fatal crashes, incompleteness of data on the bull bar status of vehicles involved in crashes, lack of data on animal strikes and the difficulty of isolating effects of bull bars from other factors associated with injury outcomes, such as vehicle size and speed.

CR 193: The development of a protective headband for car occupants (2000)

Summary

In 1997 McLean et al. (1997) demonstrated that energy absorbing headwear for car occupants might be effective in reducing the numbers of head injuries sustained by car occupants. The estimated benefits were greater than the estimated benefits of padding of the upper interior of vehicles to the requirements of the US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 201. This report investigates the suitability of selected materials for head protection, in the form of a headband that could be worn by car occupants.

CR 195: Bicycle helmets and Injury Prevention: A Formal Review (2000)

Summary

In this report, bicycle helmet efficacy is quantified using a formal meta-analytic approach based on peer-reviewed studies. Though several reviews have already been published advocating the use of helmets, this approach provides summary estimates of efficacy in terms of head injury, brain injury and facial injury based on studies of cyclists involved in crashes in which injury and helmet information is available for each individual. It also provides evidence concerning neck injury and fatal injury.
