Biomechanics of Cervical Spinal Cord Injury in Rollover Crashes

Summary

A series of physical models of the human head and neck were constructed to study, the biomechanics of the cervical spinal cord during a simulated rollover clash. These models were dynamically loaded in axial compression and the spatial and temporal patterns of strain in the spinal cord were calculated. The largest strains were seen in the regions near subluxations from simulated ligament disruptions.

The Role of Parents in the Road Safety Behaviour of Children

Summary

Survey data from 835 parents in New South Wales suggest that parents regard themselves as key providers of road safety education for their children, supported by other family and community members. Parents indicated that they see roadside learning as more effective than resources, especially resources which target either children or parents separately. They responded positively to the notion of attending training sessions and meetings.

CR 153: Grouping of Fatal Pedestrian Crashes (1996)

Summary

This research developed a typology of fatal pedestrian crashes using a multivariate statistical strategy which included homogeneity analysis and k-means clustering. Information on fatal pedestrian crashes was extracted from the 1990 version of the Federal Office of Road Safety's (FORS) "Fatality File" database. This database contained 378 variables recorded for each of 419 fatal pedestrian crashes. Using a hierarchical approach eight clusters were identified.

Bicycle Road Accidents Caused by Steering Instability

Summary

Recently the community has been made aware that certain bicycles in use in the general community possess a potential steering instability. The issue has gained increased exposure in Queensland and Australia after the death of a 12 year old girl in 1994. In this report, the stability of bicycles is investigated. A review of the present methods of accessing bicycle instability is presented and the effect of trail on the stability of bicycles is examined by testing a variety of commonly available bicycles.

Optimisation of the Omnibus Roll Cage Structure

Summary

Improvement of vehicle stability and crashworthiness to reduce rollover and to provide increased occupant protection in the event of rollover requires that the effects of design parameters on vehicle rollover propensity are thoroughly understood. Improvement of rollover characteristics of buses currently requires extensive experimentation and considerable resources associated with rollover destruction of experimental bus structures.

CR 99: Long distance truck drivers: on-road performance and economic reward (1991)

Summary

This study was undertaken to explore the underlying factors influencing the on-road behaviour of long distance truck drivers. A survey of 820 long distance truck drivers was conducted to collect the data for the study. Detailed information was obtained on the income of drivers, work routines in the industry, the incidence of schedules, and aspects of the driver's behaviour such as propensity to speed and the use of stimulant drugs.
