Response to the 2021 Regional Telecommunications Review

The Australian Government is investing $1.3 billion in regional telecommunications in response to the 2021 Regional Telecommunications review.

To get a true picture of how any potential changes to RUC could affect the industry, from owner drivers, small to mid-size operators, or larger national carriers, it’s vital to have different sized businesses involved. We are currently recruiting for both phases 2, and 3 of the Trials, contacting operators from as many industry sectors as possible in urban, regional, and remote areas across Australia.

On-road trials

The small scale trial

A small-scale 'proof of concept' trial was run over 6 months in 2019–20. The small-scale trial demonstrated that a more direct road user charging model could be trialled more broadly, with participants supporting testing of alternative charging models and data collection technology.

After consultation with industry and an evaluation of this small-scale trial, larger scale trials with up to 100 businesses and over 1000 vehicles were planned.
