The $130 million upgrade will allow more people to participate in travel, tourism, and trade opportunities.
Tasmania could see a boost to inbound tourism from overseas travellers looking to visit iconic attractions such as MONA and Cradle Mountain, with Hobart Airport now able to handle larger aircraft like the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 through its upgraded runway, taxiways and other facilities. The airport handled 2.8 million passengers in 2024-25 and this is set to grow to more than 5.5 million by 2042.
Local businesses will also be able to take advantage of better access to overseas markets through the airport upgrade.
The upgrade also provides support for Australian Defence Force air operations and safeguards the airport as Australia’s Antarctic Gateway, helping to grow economic activity in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean sectors.
The Australian Government ($60 million) partnered with Hobart Airport ($70 million) to deliver the project, which saw the creation of nearly 200 jobs during construction.
