Aviation sector encouraged to apply for ADS-B equipment rebate

Round 2 of the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) Rebate Program open for applications.

ADS-B is a system which automatically broadcasts the precise location of the aircraft via a digital data link. The data can be used by other aircraft and potentially air traffic control to show the aircraft's position and altitude.

Widespread adoption of ADS-B has the potential to improve the management of airspace, and reduce the risk of collisions between aircraft, and between aircraft and the increasing use of uncrewed aircraft such as drones. ADS-B is already mandated in Australian aircraft flying under Instrument Flight Rules, which includes most commercial flights.

Round 2 of the program provides grants of up to $5,000 for owners and pilots to install the technology on their aircraft.

Registered owners of aircraft operating under both Visual Flight Rules or Instrument Flight Rules are able to apply for the rebate, which covers 50% of the cost of buying and installing eligible equipment.

The Australian Government announced the extension and expansion of the program in the 2024–25 Budget, providing $3.6 million in additional funding over 3 years to 2026–2027 and taking total funding available over the program term to $8.4 million.

Applications for Round 2 of the program can be made at any time until 31 May 2027.
