2026 Australian Public Service Employee Census Results

The APS Employee Census is an annual staff survey that collects employee experience and sentiments across a wide range of areas such as wellbeing, innovation, communication, leadership and culture. This year, the Census was open to all our APS staff between May 4 and June 5.

Our 2026 Census results show strong scores across job satisfaction, immediate supervisor and SES leadership, against the broader APS.

With a response rate of 85%, we have access to a high-quality dataset that reflects the sentiments and views of most of our staff. Overall, our Census results show many strengths, particularly at the local level across our teams. It is encouraging to see our inclusive culture is strong, with positive results in areas such as flexible working arrangements, willingness to suggest ideas, support from supervisors and the purpose of our roles.

The results also highlight areas where we can focus our efforts. We will use the insights from the results to continue strengthening our workplace to ensure everyone feels valued and supported to deliver on our key purpose and objectives as a department.

Our 2026 Census Action Plan will be released in November 2026 and will outline the actions we will take to strive to be a better workplace than we already are.
