Located in the mid coast, in proximity of the township, Karuah. This is a high bushfire risk area with significant black spot areas. 

As soon as there is a blackout we have no phone service (experience includes loss of power for one hour resulted in phones being out for three days and no WiFi for two days).

It is also known that terrain impacts signal from towers and on large agricultural properties, loss of telecommunications hinders their productivity and knowing if they are hurt in the paddock, they can call for help.

Poor mobile reception affects daily communication, public safety, and economic opportunities, particularly during natural disasters such as cyclones and major flooding. Description of community needs:

Residents of Newbridge and the surrounding areas are facing significant challenges with mobile connectivity, including black spots, dropouts and unreliable data services. Concerns have been raised about the inability to contact authorities during emergencies, delays in emergency response times and issues with receiving emergency phone alerts, especially in an area prone to natural disasters. The very limited availability of telecommunications is frustrating for residents, businesses and visitors alike, highlighting the critical need for reliable telecommunications.

Description of community needs:

Whittlesea Township, with a population of around 7,000, is expected to grow significantly due to its designation as a growth area. The surrounding areas have faced bushfires, including the 2009 Black Saturday fires. Mobile coverage is inadequate, hindering communication for residents, businesses, and emergency services. As a growing community Whittlesea Council supports improved telecommunications to meet the needs of the growing population and ensure safety.

Grong Grong – There is poor coverage and this is a remote area. This is supported by Narrandera Shire & Telstra.

Nericon/Lake Wyangan/Beelbangera – There is poor coverage. This is supported by Griffith City Council. 

Tocumwal – capacity, flood risk. This is supported by Berrigan Shire Council.

Pan Ban - patchy/no coverage, at a risk to storm and is a remote isolated area. 

Jingellic – capacity and at a risk to fire. Seeking Department to revisit frustrated proposal (MBSPRd5).

Kamara – poor/no coverage. Seeking Department to revisit frustrated proposal (MBSPRd4).

Issue: Users experience extremely poor reception along the South Coast, with no reliable service from Bawley to Batemans Bay.

Impact: Safety risk for emergency services and severe connectivity gap.

Proposal: Advocate for Vodafone and other providers to improve infrastructure and ensure reliable coverage for all users in regional areas.

Community Location: Fearnshaw – 3778

Description of community needs:

Located along the notorious forested Black Spur section of the Maroondah Highway, a major access to nature-based tourist areas of Marysville and the lower snowfields. Area is subject to very high bushfire danger in summer and severe fog, ice and rain conditions in winter. Emergency access to communications is needed, particularly for inexperienced and tourists travelling through the area.

In 2021 25% of locations in Yarra Ranges were tested and found to be of unusable network quality. Depth of coverage is impeded by complex topography, despite carriers’ maps indicating adequate coverage.
