The Riverland region of South Australia is known for its irrigation and dryland farming, food and wine production, as well as world-renowned natural attractions and internationally recognised tourism experiences.
Mobile reception is critical for business operations and economic growth of the region.
The region is high risk of significant flood and bush fire events, as well as road trauma along its major freight routes between Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.
Many localities in this region have experienced a loss in mobile reception following the 3G switch off.

Community Location:
Darling Scarp (Shire of Waroona), Waroona Dam area
Description of community needs:
The Waroona Dam is a popular area for visitors and locals during summer. The Waroona Dam is located in State forest and is at extreme risk of being affected by bush fire.
Unfortunately, the area has poor mobile phone coverage, which makes it difficult for emergency services to communicate in the area when a bush fire or other emergency is taking place.
The area has been impacted significantly in the past. In particular, the 2016 Waroona Bushfire burnt through the Darling Scarp and Waroona Dam.
Emergency services personnel reported communication difficulties then, and the mobile phone coverage has not been improved since.

Community Location:
Avondale/Yandaran
Description of community needs:
A tower in the Avondale/Yandaran area would not only service a large area that currently has non existent mobile service, it could also help to mitigate issues of extremely poor service in the Moore Park Beach area.
These areas can be subject to severe weather, flooding and bushfire; reliable communication service is of genuine need for residents to keep updated on warnings and alerts.
My office has received numerous concerns from constituents regarding unreliable or non-existent mobile coverage in these areas, which is unacceptable in this day and age.

Community Location:
Mowbray, Far North Queensland
Description of community needs:
The Shire recently suffered catastrophic damage from TC Jasper and subsequent flooding, leaving residents trapped by floodwater and without power or essential services such as potable water.
Mowbray was especially impacted and with no mobile service residents were isolated during the crisis. Residents couldn’t receive evacuation notices, weather updates or check on each other’s safety.
The lack of coverage worsens during the FNQ wet season when regular flooding at Digger’s Bridge and Spring Creek cuts off access to essential services. Mowbray is a high-risk bushfire zone and with no service residents can’t receive emergency alerts or notify others.

Community Location:
Upper Brookfield and Lake Manchester
Description of community needs:
The communities within Upper Brookfield and the surrounding areas have very little reliable connectivity.
Mobile reception is critical for these communities, as this area is particularly prone to natural disasters and has in the past been cut off from reliable evacuation routes.
Improving mobile connectivity in this region is pivotal to the ongoing safety of the community, especially with the likelihood of flooding events increasing in the next few decades.
