Community Consultations on the Joint Standing Committee Report

Further to my recent advice on Radio Norfolk, I would like to advise the first of several Community Consultations on the October 2014 Joint Standing Committee report will be held at Rawson Hall on Wednesday 12 November at 4pm.

Each of the separate consultations will focus on specific Recommendations.

The first consultation next week will be run by an independent facilitator, Ms Vivien Twyford, and it will focus on Recommendations 1 and 2 of the Joint Standing Committee report.

Norfolk Island is situated in the Pacific Ocean approximately 1,600km north-east of Sydney, 890km north-east of Lord Howe Island and 1,100km north-west of Auckland.

What time zone is used in Norfolk Island?

Norfolk Island observes Norfolk Time (UTC+11). Daylight saving is observed on Norfolk Island (UTC+12). This means that Norfolk Island is always one hour ahead of Australian east-coast jurisdictions that observe daylight saving time.

Extension of Commonwealth arrangements

Taxation

Taxation and superannuation reforms were applied on Norfolk Island from 1 July 2016.

The taxation system applies on Norfolk Island in the same way it currently applies on mainland Australia, with the exception of indirect taxes, including goods and services tax, luxury car tax, wine equalisation tax, excise duties and customs duties. This approach is consistent with the current taxation arrangements in Australia's other external territories.

Message from Administrator

The interim transition period of the past year for Norfolk Island reform concludes 30 June 2016. While reform continues into the future, much hard work and positive change has been achieved to date so it is appropriate to focus on some messages of congratulations and thanks.

ATO visit in February

The Tax Office is returning in the week commencing 22 February.

This time its focus will be not-for-profit organisations and helping business get ready for 1 July 2016 by understanding the obligations they have for their employees.
