Given the critical importance of reliable shipping and freight for Norfolk Island, I wanted to provide you an update on a range of issues relating to sea freight supply.

The Australian Government continues to actively support availability of freight services to Norfolk Island, and work closely with the Norfolk Island Regional Council (NIRC), industry and the community to implement immediate and longer-term solutions to address supply chain challenges.

Improving the prosperity of First Nations peoples and communities is central to the success of the northern Australia agenda, and aligns with the Australian Government's commitment to Closing the Gap.

The Northern Australia Indigenous Reference Group advises the Minister for Northern Australia and the Minister for Indigenous Australians on practical actions to enhance the economic and social prosperity of First Nations peoples in northern Australia.

The current Indigenous Reference Group members were appointed in mid 2025.

Due to the continuing COVID-19 situation on mainland Australia and now also in the Indian Ocean Territories (IOT), the Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Territories, the Honourable Nola Marino MP, is extending the declared states of emergency (SoE) in Christmas Island (CI) and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (CKI) up until 30 June 2022.
