Policy statement by the Deputy Prime Minister on arrangements from 1 July 2018 for the National System for Domestic Commercial Vessel Safety

The department is responsible for administering maritime safety legislation for the Australian Government. Australia’s primary framework for maritime safety is established under the Navigation Act 2012 (Navigation Act) and the Marine Safety Domestic Commercial Vessel) National Law Act 2012 (National Law Act).

Protection of the marine environment

The Department is committed to the delivery of a robust regulatory regime that prioritises safe shipping and the protection of the marine environment from the adverse effects of shipping.

Fair Work Act 2009

The Fair Work Ombudsman provides a range of resources to help employers and employees understand their rights and obligations under Australian workplace laws. The Fair Work Ombudsman can also investigate allegations of non-compliance with these laws.

Employees working in Australia are protected by the Fair Work Act 2009. The Fair Work Act 2009 applies to any fixed platform and some ships operating in Australian territorial waters, the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone or waters about the Continental Shelf.

Section 62 of the Coastal Trading (Revitalising Australian Shipping) Act 2012 requires copies of all voyage reports received to be published on the Department's website.
