Australia continues to work closely with the ITU Telecommunication Development Sector to enhance regional connectivity and close digital divides globally.
Since 2004, our ITU contribution has supported 28 development projects across more than 30 countries. These development projects enable telecommunications and ICT capacity-building activities in the region.
Current projects include:
- Addressing the Special Telecommunications/ICT needs of the Pacific Small Island Developing States (2024)
- Creating a Circular Economy for Electronics and Electricals in Thailand and in Mongolia (2024)
- Accelerating Digital Transformation in Asia-Pacific (2023)
- Connect2Recover—Digital Infrastructure and Ecosystem Reinforcement Against COVID-19 in Asia-Pacific (2021).
Australia is proud to be a major development partner in the Asia-Pacific. Some of the outcomes we have achieved with our partners include:
- launching ITU Smart Villages and Smart Islands in Vanuatu and Samoa
- delivering digital skills training programs to more than 3,700 girls and young women across the Asia-Pacific
- supporting the development of e-waste governance frameworks to create a circular economy for electronics and electricals
- delivering Child Online Protection national assessments and translations of guidelines.
Further information on these projects and others undertaken in partnership with the ITU Development Sector is available on the Our common work with selected partners page on the ITU website.
