The Australian Government, through the department, administers the Indian Ocean Territories of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Norfolk Island, the Jervis Bay Territory, the Ashmore and Cartier Islands, and the Coral Sea Islands. The department also manages the government's interests in the Australian Capital Territory, and the Northern Territory.
Ashmore and Cartier Islands
The Territory of Ashmore and Cartier Islands comprises West, Middle and East Islands of the Ashmore Reef, Cartier Island and the 12 nautical mile territorial sea generated by these islands.
Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory
The department provides the Australian Government with strategic policy advice in relation to the government's interests in these two self-governing territories

The Coral Sea Islands Territory is made up of the islands situated in an area of approximately 780,000 square kilometres of the Coral Sea extending from the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef.

Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands are located in the Indian Ocean, 2605 and 2936 kilometres, respectively, north-west of Perth, and 490 and 1270 kilometres, respectively, south-west of Jakarta, Indonesia.
Jervis Bay Territory
The Jervis Bay Territory comprises about 6677 hectares on the southern shores of Jervis Bay, approximately 200 kilometres south of Sydney by road.
Norfolk Island is an external Australian territory in the Pacific Ocean about 1600km northeast of Sydney. It is one of Australia"s most geographically isolated communities and oldest territories.
