CR 35: Bicycle crashes in the ACT (1985)

This retrospective study focussed on bicycle crashes which resulted in admission to hospitals in the Australian Capital Territory between July 1979 and June 1983. Hospital in-patient morbidity statistics were supplemented by information from a mailed questionnaire and police accident reports.

OR 2: Fitting and Wearing of Seat Belts in Australia: The History of a Successful Countermeasure

From 1925 when road accident data for Australia were first published till 1979, over 100, 000 road users were killed and 2.2 mlllion injured. Nevertheless, motor vehicle travel is much safer today than it was fifty pears ago.

CR 54: Speed perception 1 Drivers—judgements of safety and speed on urban and rural straight roads (1987)

This project was undertaken to evaluate the role of the type of road and road width, roadside development, travel speed, driving experience and the sex of the driver on estimates of safety and travel speed.

CR 33: Town planning and road safety (1984)

This is the final report of a project (IRRD No. 605759) which involved a critical review of Australian and overseas urban planning practice aimed at road safety improvements, based on direct contact with urban local government authorities and planning bodies and an extensive literature search.

To determine the differences between the control strategiesof skilled and less-skilled riders as they control the lateral and longitudinal motion of a motorcycle, a study motorcycle handling skills and their assessment was carried out.

CR 31: Legal implications of frangible poles (1984)

The legal implications of the use of frangible or break-away poles is investigated. It is concluded that road authorities that use frangible poles will not normally be held liable to persons injured by them.

CR 10: Development of breakaway utility poles (1979)

An investigation of alternative schemes for in-situ modification of existing conductor-carrying and luminare timber poles was undertaken using a 1:7.38 scale model of the vehicle/pole/cable system.

CR 45: Rural traffic crashes in Queensland (1984)

This study was commissioned to provide a description of rural traffic crashes in Queensland using available mass data and to investigate regional effects on these crashes. The sample comprised 1078 fatal and hospital admission crashes occurring in rural areas during 1984.

CR 32: Seat belt wearing in the Canberra region—observations of occupants and interviews with drivers (1983)

Vehicle occupants were observed at five classes of site (driveway service and self-serve service stations, fast food outlets, parking areas, signalised intersection) in the Canberra region. The rate of seat belt wearing, the primary variable, varied significantly over the classes of site.
