The Australian Government has published its response to the Statutory Review of the Online Safety Act 2021 and will undertake reforms to better prevent and respond to online harms.
The independent review of the Online Safety Act 2021 was carried out by Delia Rickard PSM, and the resulting report was published in 2025.
The review examined the legislative framework to protect Australian from online harm and considered whether additional protections are needed to address new and emerging online harms.
The government supports the Review’s key recommendation to implement a digital duty of care to require digital platforms proactively manage the risk of harms from the use and misuse of their platforms and services.
The government has also agreed to the Review’s recommendations for stronger accountability and enforcement measures, to ensure digital platforms comply with Australia’s online safety laws.
In total, the government intends to implement or further consider 64 of the Review's 67 recommendations.
A bill will be introduced as soon as possible, consistent with the government’s legislation priorities.
