The Cocos Emergency Management Executive have received a further briefing from the Bureau of Meteorology this afternoon in relation to Tropical Cyclone Mangga and have agreed not to upgrade the cyclone warning level from Condition Blue.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued a Tropical Cyclone Warning for CKI with gale force winds (gusts up to 100 kilometres per hour) and heavy rain possible during Friday into Saturday morning. A tropical low is now located northwest of Cocos (Keeling) Islands and is forecast to track in a general south to south-easterly direction over the course of today and tomorrow. Please refer to www.bom.gov.au/cyclone/ for more details and make sure you listen to 6CKI for updates.
Heavy rains and high winds are expected, with an increased risk of localised flooding in low lying areas and slippery roads.
Response agencies are prepared and Emergency Management procedures are in place.
The Territory Controller Sergeant David Williams has asked that all residents for their own safety remain inside your homes from 5:00pm this evening until tomorrow morning (Saturday 23rd May 2020).
The West and Home Island Cyclone Shelters will NOT be opened.
If you require emergency assistance, please contact police on 000 or 9162 6600, or on VHF Channel 20.
Stay safe and please listen and follow all instructions from the Territory Controller, Sergeant David Williams and his AFP team.
