There is widespread consensus that young adults are over-represented in motor vehicle accident statistics. This report presents findings of research undertaken in the Newcastle region that analysed young males" driving behaviour and their attitudes towards the question of road safety.

This monograph compares Australia's road safety performance to its OECD counterparts. The comparisons are drawn taking into account the level of motorisation and population of the countries reported. The results highlight the substantial gains made in road safety both in Australia and many other countries from 1970 to 1994. This document reports the findings from a national survey of 1,298 people representative of the general public aged 15 years and over, conducted in June 1997. The survey is Wave 10 in a series of similar national studies conducted since October 1986 for the ATSB Road Safety, designed to monitor key community attitudes toward road safety issues. The previous survey in the series, Wave 9, was conducted 12 months earlier.

This report presents the findings of the Case-control study of motorcycle crashes. The cases were 222 motorcycle crashes occurring on public roads in the Melbourne metropolitan area from late November 1995 to 30 January 1997 in which the rider or pillion was taken to one of the participating hospitals or died. The controls were 1195 motorcyclist trips which passed the crash site at the same time of day and day of week as the crash occurred.

A review of existing Commonwealth, State and Territory legislation relating to the transport of dangerous goods by rail, was undertaken. The review provides an overview of the status, coverage and adequacy of existing rail dangerous goods transport legislation. The review also examines options for the development of a nationally uniform regulatory regime for rail dangerous goods transport operations. Issues relating to inter-modal harmony with the road transport sector, and legislative options to achieve uniformity are also discussed.
