Improving Norfolk Island's mobile network

Today I am releasing the Norfolk Island Mobile Network report which clearly shows the need for improvements to the Norfolk Island mobile network and infrastructure to better support businesses and the community, and assists in economic growth and opportunities in the tourism sector.

The report was undertaken by GQI Consulting and assessed the existing 2G mobile network, Norfolk Island's mobile network requirements, technical solutions and costs for recommended improvements.

Employment officials to engage with local businesses

Australian Government Department of Employment and Fair Work Ombudsman staff will be on Island to meet with local employers throughout the week commencing Monday 17 August 2015.

The meetings are a ‘listen and learn’ exercise which will be used to develop the best approach to implement the federal workplace relations system on Norfolk Island.

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are located in the Indian Ocean, 2936 kilometres north-west of Perth and 1270 kilometres south-west of Jakarta, Indonesia (approximate figures using international airports). There are 27 coral islands in the group with a total land area of approximately 15.6 square kilometres.

Strategy prioritises road infrastructure and the safety of road users

I am pleased to release the Norfolk Island Roads Audit and Strategy which provides an audit of the Island's paved road system, assessing the condition of infrastructure and identifying priority improvements and redesigns to minimise road and pedestrian safety risks.

This report will inform future road works which require urgent attention, safety improvements and a longer term strategy to maintaining the road system.

Her Majesty The Queen

This coming week Her Majesty The Queen becomes the longest reigning British Monarch in history.

Of course, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is our Head of State as Queen of Australia.

Her Majesty ascended to the throne on the death of her father King George VI in the early hours of the morning of 6 February 1952.

Her Majesty's coronation was held on 2 June 1953.

“A Young Commonwealth” recognises the capacity, contribution and potential of young people, particularly given those aged 29 or under account for the majority of the Commonwealth's population, and play a vital role at the heart of sustainable development and democracy.

Lease signed for Australian Government Shopfront

I was pleased to sign a lease agreement today for the Australian Government Shopfront on Norfolk Island, which will be located at 67A Taylors Road near the roundabout.

Over coming days I look forward to seeing signs going up and the commencement of construction using local tradespeople as the Australian Government continues to deliver on its commitment to Norfolk Island.

Doug Creek earns a little river of Gold for Norfolk

Norfolk Island pistol shooters have won Gold, Silver and two Bronze Medals to dominate the XV Pacific Games in Port Moresby Papua New Guinea.

Congratulations to Doug Creek for winning a Gold and two Bronze Medals and Kevin Coulter for winning a Silver Medal.

Both Kevin and Doug have had to relearn their skill after being forced to change hands for pistol shooting.

Shaping change on Norfolk Island

As part of the constructive work to address economic growth, community protection and progressive sustainable governance, I am pleased to announce changes to some Norfolk Island laws.

His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia, made the Norfolk Island Continued Laws Amendment (2015 Measures No.1) Ordinance 2015 yesterday.
