A pilot study was undertaken in the Hunter region of Australia during 1985-86 to determine feasibility, benefits and costs of alternate databases to be used for analysis of the medical outcomes of road traffic crashes.

CR 47: Helmets for child bicyclists—some biomedical considerations (1986)

The epidemiology of bicycle crashes identifies helmets as a major countermeasure, especially for children. Head impact tolerance, impact site, need for penetration resistance and sizing are reviewed, but not heat dissipation, though it is an important user consideration.

A study to examine the dose-dependency of the effects of alcohol and marijuana alone and in combination on a battery of tests of human psychomotor performance and mood is reported.

The report describes a series of nine barrier crash tests performed on behalf of the Federal Office of Road Safety to investigate frontal impacts on forward-control vehicles, or vans.

Rehabilitation programmes for drink drivers have been established in many places in Australia and New Zealand.

CR 44: Primary school road safety curricula: a review of Australian materials and practices (1986)

Review of primary school road safety education materials and practices in the categories of pedestrian, bicycle, restraint usage and alcohol and safety. Developers and teachers of road safety were surveyed. The major materials were collated and the instructional design of the materials analysed.

CR 42: Policing the drink driver—random breath testing and the process of deterrence (1986)

A theoretical model of the process of general deterrence is constructed, and tested against data collected as part of an evaluation of the impact of the introduction of random breath testing (RBT) in New South Wales, Australia in December 1982.

CR 53: Implementation of graduated licensing for young drivers (1986)
