Call to help shape the future of automated vehicles in Australia

Date published:

The Australian Government is seeking the public’s help to shape the future rules for automated vehicles in Australia.

Automated vehicle technology is advancing rapidly and it’s critical that we make the most of this technology in a safe way.

That’s why we are working to develop a new law – the Automated Vehicle Safety Law – to manage the safe operation of automated vehicles on our public roads.

As part of this consultation, the Government is considering how the law should keep modifications, repairs and remote operation of automated vehicles safe, and how to make sure consumers get the information they need about automated vehicles.

The consultation also explores changes to state and territory laws, including whether there needs to be new road rules for people using automated vehicles.

This technology will impact everyone who uses our roads, not just those using automated vehicles, so the Government encourages all road users, industry and other stakeholders to take a look at the consultation paper and have their say.

Public feedback is crucial to ensuring we strike the right balance with this new law.

This builds on extensive consultation already undertaken by the National Transport Commission, which is leading this critical work alongside the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts.

This latest round of consultation is seeking feedback on new areas of the proposed law and closes on 11 June 2024.
