The eSafety Commissioner has released industry guidance that says the onus is on social media platforms to prevent under 16’s from holding an account, and they are expected to proactively address attempts to circumvent the restrictions.
Platforms are expected to communicate transparently with their users about the age restrictions, and to monitor and improve their systems as technology changes.
From 10 December, failure by platforms to take reasonable steps to comply with the new obligations can attract fines of up to $49.5 million.
