New telecommunications laws boost consumer protections

Australians will benefit from stronger consumer protections and greater accountability in the telecommunications sector.

The new laws give the Australian Communications and Media Authority stronger enforcement powers, including the ability to take direct action for breaches of industry codes and issue significantly higher penalties.

The reforms will help ensure telecommunications providers meet their obligations to their customers, including people experiencing financial hardship and domestic, family and sexual violence.

The legislation also establishes a carriage service provider registration scheme, making it easier for the regulator to identify telecommunications providers and improve industry accountability.

The changes will support a fairer and more accountable telecommunications sector for Australians.
