Reforms to the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 are now in effect.
New accessibility rules for public transport have commenced, helping make public transport safer, easier to use and more accessible for people with disability.
The updated Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (Transport Standards) aim to eliminate discrimination and reduce barriers for people with disability across all stages of a public transport journey. The reforms introduce a range of new requirements, including staff training, information sharing, and the safety and design of public transport services and infrastructure.
The reforms were developed in consultation with people with disability, operators and providers of public transport, and state and territory governments.
Some changes will take effect immediately and others will be introduced over time or when new assets are purchased or existing infrastructure is significantly upgraded.
We've developed resources to help community and industry better understand the changes to the Transport Standards, including summary documents available in Easy Read and Auslan.
