Maritime Emissions Reduction National Action Plan released

The Maritime Emissions Reduction National Action Plan (MERNAP) sets out actions to support decarbonisation in Australia’s maritime sector.

The Australian Government has released the MERNAP, which outlines a set of actions and priorities to support Australia’s maritime sector in the global shift toward net zero.

The MERNAP proposes 7 priorities to achieve maritime decarbonisation across the overarching themes of the energy, port and shipping relationship, domestic commercial vessels, and skills and training.

Priorities include investing in port infrastructure and operations which accelerate decarbonisation and reducing regulatory burden for emerging maritime technology.

The MERNAP prioritises lowering emissions in the near term to ensure opportunities are unlocked sooner, and potential future disruptions and costs are minimised.

Complementing other Australian Government initiatives, the MERNAP will help ensure local shipping remains competitive and prosperous.
