Australian Government response to the Senate Standing Committees on Environment and Communications Legislation Committee report: Interactive Gambling Amendment (Credit and Other Measures) Bill 2023 [Provisions]

Credit card ban

Online wagering service providers are banned from accepting credit cards, credit-related products (e.g. digital wallets) or digital currencies (e.g. cryptocurrency) as payment methods. These requirements commenced on 11 June 2024.

This brings online wagering in line with land-based gambling regulations, where credit card use is already banned.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has responsibility for overseeing compliance with the credit betting ban.

BetStop – the National Self-Exclusion Register

The Australian Government launched BetStop – the National Self-Exclusion Register (BetStop) on 21 August 2023. BetStop is the tenth and final measure of the National Consumer Protection Framework for Online Wagering.

Interactive gambling

A gambling service is considered "interactive" if it is provided on broadcasting, datacasting, telephone, and online platforms. These services broadly fit into 3 categories:

The Australian Government and state and territory governments share responsibility for the regulation of gambling services. 

The Department of Social Services has lead responsibility for the Australian Government’s online gambling harm minimisation agenda. We provide advice to the Government about the regulation of interactive gambling services and harm minimisation initiatives such as BetStop – the National Self Exclusion Register and gambling advertising.
