Community Location: Yumali, Coonalpyn, Tintinara, Netherton, KiKi, Meningie

Description of community needs:

Community feedback has identified many locations in MacKillop with significant connectivity issues which appear to have been further impacted by the recent shut-down of the 3G network.

Mobile coverage is critical for emergency communication and access to assistance in rural and regional areas. These localities include many major Highways ( Dukes, Ngarkat, Princes and Southern Ports) and roads that link our regional areas. Many locations along these roads have limited mobile coverage impeding safety and effective business operations. Reliable mobile coverage is vital in mitigating the impact of road crashes.

Community Location: Teewah Beach

Description of community needs:

The lack of mobile phone coverage at Teewah Beach has been raised as a serious safety issue given there are an estimated 200,000 visitors each year. Much of Teewah Beach is a designated road. The area is isolated and popular with recreational fishers and campers. There have been numerous incidents of vehicle rollovers, drownings, and other tragedies where emergency services were unable to be contacted due to lack of mobile phone service.

The proposal is supported by the Cooloola Coast Chamber of Commerce, Gympie Regional Council, Noosa Shire Council, and regional emergency services.

Description of community needs:

The Riverina electorate is susceptible to natural disasters, notably floods, fires and severe storms. A regional area, the Riverina is dependent on telecommunications for accessing support services.

Telecommunications play a vital role in managing and mitigating the impacts of natural disasters in the region. Its effectiveness influences emergency response, recovery efforts and community resilience.

Community feedback has identified locations in need of improved coverage to ensure reliable and efficient responses during natural disasters, foster quicker recovery efforts and enable a better prepared and more resilient community.

Community Location: Pomonal

Description of community needs:

Pomonal, a small community in Western Victoria, was devastated by recent bushfires, destroying 46 homes in a town of 300 people.

Located near the Grampians and key tourist spots like Pomonal Estate, effective communication is crucial in such bushfire-prone areas. Mobile communications are especially important as they enable timely warnings, evacuation orders, and updates on fire progress.

They also help coordinate emergency responses and recovery efforts. Clear and accessible mobile communication ensures that residents and tourists stay informed, supporting both community safety and the long-term recovery of the area.

Community Location: Pacific Highway, The Lakes Way, The Bucketts Way, Thunderbolts Way

Description of community needs:

Tourism is a major industry for the MidCoast, valued at over $800M per year. As a self-drive destination, these are distinct tourist drives. Visitors are often ill-prepared for travelling through remote areas with inadequate mobile coverage and are reliant on their mobile phones for mapping, travel safety and emergency response services. Lack of coverage interferes with business operations, experiencing difficulty communicating with their customers and providing quality services.

After flooding in 2021-22, and continued increases in traffic and harsh weather conditions, the roads are damaged and are dangerous to travel on.

Community Location: Wymah Murray River Road

Description of community needs:

The Murray River Road (also known as the Great River Road) is an important link for tourists between Albury Wodonga and Corryong and into the Upper Murray and Alpine region. The road services growing tourist numbers, school buses, and commuting residents.

The section of the road at Wymah is a well known blackspot which hinders important communications capacity. The Wymah ferry is an important tourist and economic link between Victoria and NSW and the black spot impacts on that connection. Greater Hume Shire support this project as an important cross border initiative.

Community Location: "Kruiapple" 15 kilometres south of Yetman, NSW on MR63, Yetman Road - Yetman

Description of community needs:

Mobile coverage is poor in Yetman and almost nonexistent outside of the village. Kruiapple is an ideal location to enhance coverage in Yetman and provide coverage for motorists and freight vehicles, which would increase safety along Yetman road.

A substantial amount of residents conduct business in Inverell and substantive mobile phone coverage is essential. The area is susceptible to flooding and getting flood warnings to residents is difficult when mobile coverage is poor.

Community Location: Tuan, Beaver Rock and the area all the way south to Tin Can Bay. (Boonooroo Road, Tuan Forest Road and Cooloola Coast Roads), including most of the coast inland of the Great Sandy Strait.

Description of community needs:

This area is a black spot, presenting a safety issue for thousands of workers, businesses, and residents and visitors who use boat ramps and camping spots. The Tuan Mill, one of Queensland’s largest timber mills, processes around 70 truckloads of logs daily.

The Cooloola Coast Road is heavily trafficked and used as an alternative route when the Bruce Highway is closed. The area is also subject to flooding and becomes cut off. The proposal to improve coverage is supported by the Fraser Coast Regional Council, Fraser Coast Tourism, the Tuan Mill, and the contractors and small businesses who traverse the area.
