Maps: Explanatory notes
The maps depict the high speed rail alignment from north to south commencing at Roma Street, Brisbane and finishing at Southern Cross, Melbourne. The city maps are at a scale of 1:10,000 and the regional maps are at 1:25,000. The maps are collated in series between geographical locations such as ‘Greenbank to Whiporie’, ‘Beaudesert to Robina’ and so on. The alignment distances are reset to zero on the first sheet of each series to avoid cumulative effects on subsequent series if the preceding series alignment distances changed.
The limitations arising from the type of data used for the study can affect the type and extent of earthworks and location of the rail boundaries. Other elements such as rail under or over roads or railways may vary during more detail study when survey data accuracy improves. In addition, some of the underpasses shown could become overpasses (and vice versa) at detail design.
Road and rail infrastructure diversions were shown to maintain connectivity and have been depicted based on aerial photography and cadastre information. Diversions have been shown for formed roads, rail (including disused railways), unformed roads (defined by cadastre boundaries) and fire trails (from aerial photography). Any diversions would need to be negotiated with the relevant authorities before finalising the diversion arrangements.
Listed below are some specific points of note:
- Map 13 (for example)—in certain instances, road diversions or overpasses/underpasses are shown on the alignment where there does not appear to be a road. This happens where the roads are minor and cannot be seen on the printed datasets.
- Maps 192–193—Majura Parkway—A grade separated junction will be required for the high speed railway to pass over the Majura Parkway close to its junction with Mount Majura Road. Whilst provision for a bridge has been made at this stage, detailed design would establish the optimum solution which may warrant realignment of the parkway to minimise the overall cost.
- In several instances, names of suburbs appear in bold type within the alignment. These are on the background mapping system and cannot be relocated.
Brisbane to Sydney
- BS1—Roma Street to Grafton (including connection to the Gold Coast)
- BS2—Grafton to Port Macquarie
- BS3—Port Macquarie to Twelve Mile Creek
- BS4—Twelve Mile Creek to Mount Kuring-gai
Sydney to Melbourne
- SM1—Mount Kuring-gai to Goulburn
- SM23—Goulburn to Albury-Wodonga (including connection to Canberra)
- SM34—Albury-Wodonga to Melbourne
These drawings have been prepared for the purpose of depicting the recommended alignment for the High Speed Rail system and to enable civil construction cost estimates to be made. The alignment, alignment boundaries and location of structures have been approximated by AECOM based on existing datasets and digital mapping. AECOM has not carried out detailed site surveys of vertical and horizontal features or specific geotechnical, environmental and engineering investigations.
The provisional corridor boundary is reflective of the uncertainties which arise primarily from the vertical tolerances in the mapping used, inaccuracies in the cadastre (property boundaries) as well as provisions for noise treatment (barriers or mounds), water quality features (drains, silt traps) and maintenance access roads, as described in Chapter 3 and Appendix 3C. These result in the provisional corridor boundary shown on the maps being wider than would be needed in practice. Further refinement of the alignment, and hence the corridor width, would occur in subsequent phases when the preliminary design is developed for environmental impact assessment and planning approval.
