We worked with the Internet Industry Association (IIA) to develop a voluntary cyber security code of practice for internet service providers.
Known as the icode, it provides a consistent approach for Australian ISPs to help inform and protect their clients in relation to cyber security issues, and address the problem of compromised computers on their networks.
The icode was implemented on 1 December 2010. More than 30 ISPs, representing up to 90 per cent of the Australian home internet market, have signed up to the icode.
The Department led a Government review of the icode to assess its effectiveness. The Government has now completed this review and will work with ISPs and consumer representatives to make the icode more effective. The review has made nine recommendations including:
- improved ISP reporting on compliance
- better collection of metrics
- a consistent approach to education and awareness raising
The IIA will launch a revised icode, which takes into account the key recommendations of the Government review, shortly.
