Further consultation on safe harbour legislation

The Australian Government announced it will undertake further consultation with stakeholders on the extension of the safe harbour provisions in the Copyright Act 1968.

An expanded safe harbour scheme is intended to give confidences to both copyright holders and service providers. It will provide a mechanism for rights holders to have material that infringes their copyright removed and also protect service providers from legal liability when infringement occurs on their services, provided they take steps reasonable steps to take down infringing material.

Our Secretary, Dr Heather Smith PSM, will oversee a series of roundtable discussions with key stakeholders on the proposed changes and will provide advice to Government by June 2017.

The proposed changes are part of broader reforms to Australian Copyright Law. This includes legislation to enable websites promoting piracy to be blocked and recently introduced reforms to improve access to works for people with disabilities.
