The Government has extended the application deadline for grants to help foster public interest journalism in regional Australia.
The grants are part of a $60 million Government package designed to help regional and small publishers stay at the forefront of the rapidly changing media environment.
The Regional and Small Publishers' Jobs and Innovation Package includes scholarships for university students and cadetships to be delivered by small and regional publishers.
The first funding round includes:
- 30 scholarships of up to $40,000 each for eligible universities, exclusively for journalism students from regional and rural areas, to help them pay for tuition and living costs.
- 100 cadetships of up to $40,000 each for eligible publishers split across regional small metropolitan publishers to subsidise the cost of hiring and training new cadets.
The deadline for applications has been extended for two weeks until 10 August 2018.
