Vehicle type approval detailed guides published

Three detailed vehicle type approval guides have been published on the department’s website.

The new guidance materials are:

The guides expand on the information covered in the overviews already published on the department’s website.

From 1 July 2021, the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018 (RVSA) is replacing the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 (MVSA).

Vehicle type approval applications will open from 1 July 2021.

Under the RVS legislation, road vehicles must be entered on to the Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV) before they can be provided to another person for road use in Australia for the first time. To be entered on the RAV, a road vehicle must first be granted either a vehicle type approval or a concessional RAV entry approval.

The vehicle type approval guide provides detailed information about vehicle type approvals and how to apply.

Under the RVS legislation, manufacturers and importers of low aggregate trailer mass (ATM) trailers with an ATM of 4.5 tonnes or less will need an approval (a vehicle type or concessional RAV entry approval). The Guide to vehicle type approvals for Low ATM trailers 4.5t ATM or less explains in detail how to apply for a vehicle type approval for a low ATM trailer.

Eligible holders of some approvals under the MVSA will be able to transition to a VTA via an opt-in process. The Guide to vehicle type approval opt-in arrangements describes in detail the transition process from an MVSA approval to an RVSA approval.
