Tenee's Story

Photo of Tenee I joined the Department in January 2015 through the Indigenous Pathways Traineeship Programme, and am currently working as an Executive Assistant to the General Manager of the People and Performance Branch within the Corporate Services Division. My role as an Executive Assistant involves managing the General Managers day-to-day work activities, assisting the Branch with administration tasks and liaising with other EA's and Senior Executive Staff across the Department. It's often a busy and demanding role that can't be defined with one simple job description as my tasks change so often, no two days are ever the same. I enjoy working in the Department mostly because of the friendly and supportive culture.

I wouldn't be where I am without the guidance and support of the people I work with. The Department's Indigenous Staff Network has been great for me as an Aboriginal woman as I didn't have many connections in Canberra and it has been one way I've felt like I had someone to go to if I ever needed to chat. I also found my mentor through the ISN which is one of the most important work relationships I have. My experience in the Traineeship Programme has been a key turning point in my life and the most positive thing I have ever chosen to do. Before commencing my Traineeship I was unaware of what career choices were available to me but since entering the Department I have been given many amazing opportunities for both professional development and career progression and now I even have my first qualification; a Certificate IV in Government.
