Project summary

The project uses smart technology to better understand the lived experience of a neighbourhood via interaction with the activity centre. This includes collection of near real-time and historic data to plan better and be more effective in improvements to the lives of residents, visitors and workers in the Jackson Court Neighbourhood.

The challenge

There is a difference between perception and what quantitative data tells us. Often at Council we struggle to get up-to-date live and historic data that allows us to inform our community and plan for effective improvements.

Solution

The project will provide near real-time and historic data on traffic usage, local environment and pedestrian movement that will inform us of the lived experience of the traders, visitors and residents in the Jackson Court Neighbourhood.

Benefits

The project will deliver better access to data that not only inform us but empowers the whole population. The data will be made available via open data, which can be used by traders and the general public to make more informed decisions.

Lessons learned

Traders, visitors and residents have a perception of issues and concerns, yet there is little to no evidence of these. The smart technology will provide near real time and historic data to either confirm the perception or provide an alternative

Outcomes

Creation of a Discovery Group of traders, residents and representatives of community groups has shown an interest from the wider community to explore opportunities for improvements.

A Liveability Assessment has been published which explores several liveability indicators. The results will be tested with the Discovery Group to better understand the lived experience and real world impact of the indicators.
