The Illawarra-Shoalhaven Smart Water Management project will use smart technology solutions and develop data analytics to respond to and improve storm-water management, water quality, flood mitigation and access to information to ensure community safety in flash flood events. This project is a regional collaboration between local government, tertiary and secondary education institutes, the water industry and the development sector.
The management of stormwater is a key responsibility for local governments and major challenge to consider in planning for urban growth to address Australia's ever expanding population. Annually, significant investment is required to manage our waterways and install, renew and upgrade stormwater infrastruture to safely convey stormwater to local waterways while minimising the impact on water quality and the risk and impact of flooding.
The Smart Water Management project will use new smart technologies and develop data analytics to help improve water quality, flood mitigation and ensure community safety in flash flood events. Through the use of sensors the project will: improve stormwater culvert blockage management; manage estuaries more effectively and reduce flooding; manage water quality and gross pollution traps; as well as produce a new information platform for the public to provide warnings and other information to reduce risk to life and property.
With 85 percent of Australians living within 50km of coastal areas and waterways, their communities have resigned themselves to the realities of weather extremities such as flood and storms impacting their towns and businesses. The project will improve public safety and water management outcomes in relation to such severe weather events through collecting, monitoring, gathering, sharing and interpreting of relevant and meaningful data.
Outcomes from this project will be scalable and immediately transferable to communities and industries across Australia.
