Security of Dangerous Goods

At the Australian Transport Council on 19 November 2004, Transport Ministers agreed that the National Transport Commission (NTC) develop a nationally consistent approach for the security regulation of dangerous goods, through the development of model legislation for implementation by the States and Territories. The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government is supporting the NTC in this task.

On 8 December 2004, the National Counter-Terrorism Committee (NCTC) agreed that the NTC work form a key component of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Review of Hazardous Materials. It was also agreed that model legislation be limited to the transport component of the supply chain, and give primary attention to the list of substances identified through the COAG Review.

A nationally consistent and coordinated approach to the security regulation of dangerous goods will provide a platform to address the security concerns raised by industry groups regarding compliance with differing requirements.
