Airport Watch update 2: Conclusion of the Airport Watch Trial at Adelaide Airport

The Airport Watch Trial concluded on Friday 21 May 2010.  For five weeks, the Airport Watch Trial aimed to increase security awareness at Adelaide Airport by engaging the airport community to better identify and report suspicious activities.

The Department of Infrastructure and Transport (the Department) is in the process of analysing data and feedback received from the Australian Federal Police, the Department's Transport Security Coordination Centre and the Adelaide Airport community.

Initial feedback demonstrates a high level of support from the Adelaide Airport community for the Airport Watch concept and enthusiasm to see a similar security initiative implemented nationally.  The airport community also thought that the Airport Watch Trial was beneficial in building stronger relationships with the police and airport management.

Examples of participant feedback included:

"Airport Watch is a good initiative to support the general security awareness that is expected as an aviation participant."

"Airport Watch increases security awareness and fast track reporting suspicious activity to relevant authorities."

"Airport Watch ensures that we are more aware of what to do when we see and hear anything suspicious and who to contact..."

"It was good to involve the community - makes people feel part of their work environment."

Pending the evaluation of the Airport Watch Trial data, the Department will formally consider the trial outcomes and the likely implications.

Following the success of the trial, Adelaide Airport has advised that the Airport Watch program will continue at the airport.

The Department would like to thank the Adelaide Airport community, the Australian Federal Police and South Australian Police for their support and participation during the Airport Watch Trial.
