Aviation Security Training Framework
The Australian Government committed $3.8 million to developing a training framework (known as the Aviation Security Training Framework) as one measure in assisting achieving national consistency in aviation security through training. The Wheeler Review specifically Recommendation 15 identified the need for the Office of Transport Security within the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government to offer appropriate and increased security-orientated training and guidance, and communicate with airports, to help determine their security needs.
The Aviation Security Training Framework will support the aviation industry to meet legislated requirements for training by developing competency-based training and assessment standards for workers with a security responsibility in a security controlled airport. The department is working in partnership with the aviation industry to gain an insight into the industry needs to enable the development of a high quality training framework which will be available to airports to train their staff.
This Aviation Security Training Framework will benefit the transport sector by enabling employees to develop nationally recognised skills related to transport security which will provide increased capacity for industry to attract and retain good staff due to the transferability of skills. Aviation industry employees will benefit by acquiring these nationally recognised and required skills which will enable mobility between industry jobs and employers.
Enhanced aviation security training will assist industry and the Government to continue to provide a secure environment for aviation into the future to maintain Australia's status as a secure provider of aviation transport.
